Why can't EU investors buy US ETFs?

Because US ETFs publish no KID. Since 2018 the EU's PRIIPs rules require a key information document for every packaged investment sold to retail investors, and US fund issuers do not write one, so EU brokers cannot offer their ETFs to retail clients.

Funds built under the EU's UCITS rules come with a KID. That is why the big issuers run UCITS versions of their funds, mostly domiciled in Ireland, and why the twin of a US ETF is usually an Irish fund on the same index.

Professional clients and some other cases fall under different rules; your broker can tell you which apply to your account.

Accumulating or distributing: which share class?

An accumulating class reinvests the dividends inside the fund; a distributing class pays them out to you, usually every quarter. When both are classes of one fund, they hold the same portfolio at the same fee: SPYL and SPY5 are the two classes of the same S&P 500 fund.

Which one suits you depends on whether you want the income and on how your country taxes each kind.

What does Irish domicile mean for US dividends?

An Irish-domiciled fund receives the dividends of US companies after a 15% US withholding tax, the rate of the tax treaty between the United States and Ireland. The tax is paid inside the fund: you see it as slightly lower returns, not as a line on your statement.

How the fund's dividends and gains are taxed in your hands depends on the country you live in. This is general information, not tax advice.

How we choose the twin

The closest index comes first: the same index where a UCITS fund tracks it, otherwise the nearest one, and the page then says there is no exact twin.

On that index we take the lowest fee among plain index funds of at least €500M with a Xetra line in euros. When the cheapest share class has no Xetra line, we show the cheapest one that has, and list the other.

Fees, holdings, fund sizes and listings come from each fund issuer's own pages and documents. Fund sizes count every share class and are converted to euros at the European Central Bank's reference rate of their stated date.

The top-10 overlap on each fund's page compares the ten largest holdings of the US fund and of its twin, as our portfolio analysis reads them: how many names they share, and how much of the US fund's top-10 weight those names make up.
